Trendy Spring Home Maintenance Tips.
March 18, 2010 | Tagged do it your self home maintenance tips, home maintenance, keeping your home new, spring home tips, spring maintenance, spring maintenance tips, THE TRENDY HOME | Leave a Comment

It’s spring, which means flowers, rain, baseball, gardening, Bar-B-Q’s, desperate attempts to get in shape before swimsuit season, skipping work to be outside before it gets unbearably hot…
Spring also means it’s time for home maintenance after a winter of neglect, and you are NOT alone on this one. I have already started the “Honey Do” list of items for this weekend.
But lets be honest, our home is our biggest investment that “most” of us will ever make and we need to protect that investment. Doing your seasonal maintenance duties will only help to ensure your investment, and help you give you that pride of ownership that we should feel about owning our home.
Spring and Winter are too season’s that one should really look at their home and make sure it’s ready for the climate change.

It’s time to open up those windows and let the sun shine in. When I was a little girl it was a family affair, my father would get the ladder out and my older brother and Dad would take down all the storm windows for the winter. My older sisters would wash the windows, and us “young ones” got to wash the screens all before my Father would put the clean screen back up over those nice clean windows. Making it fun and most of the time we would all be soaked when we were done, but we would all be laughing and here I am talking about those memories 50 years later.

Taking the time to do some Spring maintenance on your home can ensure a summer full of fun. Check your hoses, did the winter season make them brittle, or freezing water split them at the seems, or do they just need new washers?

Maintaining your home’s weather-resistive properties is a simple but effective method of protecting your investment for years to come. Use a screwdriver to probe the wood trim around windows, doors, railings and decks. Make repairs now before the spring and summer rains do more damage to the exposed wood. Chalk it up to Caulking!
Schedule an annual tune-up for your heating and cooling system. Clean or change air filters and remove dust from around grills and ducts. Outdoor air conditioner condensers need attention now, too. Disconnect the power from the condenser and clear away any leaves and debris with a vent brush or power blower. You can minimize problems with debris by wrapping fiberglass mesh around the condenser coil; just be sure to regularly check and replace the mesh as needed.
If you have window air conditioning units, remove the covers and clean the filters. Make sure they’re running properly before the hot weather arrives.
Remember, not all spring maintenance is outside!
Now’s a good time to make your home “The Trendy Home”!
Thanks,
Cathy

DIY Trendy Kids’ Dresser
March 17, 2010 | Tagged chalkboard paint, do it yourself ideas, magnetic latex primer, magnetic primer, THE TRENDY HOME, tips on using chalkboard paint, tips on using magnetic latex primer | Leave a Comment

What an idea – letting kids write on their furniture… I saw this in Better Homes and Garden and I wanted to share this idea with my readers.
Refresh that old dresser with two coats of RustOleum brush on chalkboard paint, perfect for your kids to doodle and when they grow up you can write on “Reminders” like clean your room, make your bed.
You can also paint the dresser first with RustOleum Magnetic latex primer, then paint with the chalkboard paint – now you have a surface that is magnetic AND writable. This idea is great for the young child in your home, or the teenager in the family. Great place to hang those concert tickets or prom tickets for safe keeping.

Let your child be creative, and when they get tired it all they have to do is erase it!
Other DIY idea: Paint a wall in your child’s room with the Chalkboard paint, or paint a space and frame it with molding to create a picture frame look. If you don’t want to paint your walls get a piece of plywood, cut it to the size you want and paint it with the chalkboard paint and frame it and hang it on the wall.
Trendy Tips:
Paint over the magnetic paint with two coats of chalkboard paint to finish.
Give the chalkboard paint three full days to dry and cure. Then rub chalk over the entire painted surface and erase. Let the drawing begin!
Have fun and be creative.

Let’s Make your Bathroom Trendy
March 11, 2010 | Tagged bathroom tile, hand painted tiles, trendy bathroom, trendy bathroom tile | Leave a Comment

If you are a avid reader of my blogs, you know I LOVE color… This is a great “Trendy” work of tile and color. Wonder where they found that towel?
This is a great look and still within your budget, include a few “hand painted” or “imported” tiles along with the affordable tiles, make a random pattern to create a very rich, and trendy look to any bathroom. Pull out the color from those hand painted tiles and carry that color through out your bathroom. Love the chicken lamp in the bathroom, be creative and have fun!

A little Do-It-Your-Self painting and see how you can wake up these walls and actually create a very spa like feel to your bathroom. Remember, when you do paint a bathroom I would suggest using mold and mildew proof primers and paints.

I just loved this look, look at that floor! Here they took a side hutch cabinet that they were not using, made a cut out for a drop in sink and took off the back or cut out for the plumbing to create a very beautiful and one of a kind trendy look.

If you have a bath tub I truly feel this is a must! Not only does it give any bathroom that “Trendy” look, but let’s look at the functionality. Easy to rinse out your tub, your hair, your children, and even the family pet!
Hope you enjoyed this blog on some Trendy Bathroom ideas.

Trendy Garden Tips for March
March 1, 2010 | Tagged aphids, chelated iron, fertilizing, Garden tips, high bloom fertilizer, lawn care, perennials., pest control, snails and slugs, white flies | Leave a Comment

March can be a busy month for gardeners and I came across some tips for us “Home Gardeners”.
Bulbs: Once them bloom cut the faded flowers from the spring builds. The unsightly foliage of daffodils and other spring bulbs should NOT be removed or tied up yet as the bulb needs the nourishment from these leaves for the food energy to produce next year’s flowers.
Clumps of perennials can be divided this month that are just showing new growth.

Perennial Plant - Coreopsis
Prune flowering fruit trees and other deciduous spring flowering shrubs as soon as the blossoms are finished. Prune, shape and thin, direct the growth pattern outward, and to open the center to light to promote heavy new growth to bloom next year.
Clean out dead leaves and branches from evergreen shrubs and trees. Hold off until the end of the month or April to prune sub-tropicals such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, fuchsia and other frost damaged plants.

Pest Control: Look out for those pesty aphids and white flies on the new leaves of your roses and other shrubs. For a few troubled plants wash with a strong jet of water. You can also use an insecticidal soap or vinegar in a sprayer with a hose attachment applied at the rate of two tablespoons per gallon. For a few bushes with mildew, spray household Lysol or the vinegar solution. It is advised to spray roses with this vinegar solution three times a year, spring, late May, and August. Keep a scheduled regime to get rid of snails and slugs.
Fertilizing is a must for blooming plants. It is advised to use a light solution of a balanced or high bloom fertilizer (one-half strength) twice a month. Don’t forget to fertilize your acid loving plants this month ans use a dose of chelated iron if the leaves are turning yellow. It is advised to keep a record as to when you do fertilize your plants, too much to worse than not at all!
LAWNS: March is a good time to renovate your old lawn or sow a new one. Both established lawns and winter-dormant lawns could use a good high nitrogen feeding fertilizer 21-0-0. Don’t use a weed and feed product with an insecticide as it kills good insects as well. Treat lawns that the European crane fly has infested. This is also a good time to renovate and thatch your lawn.

Don’t forget to change your clocks and your sprinkler system clocks ahead for Sunday, March 14th.
Note: This advise is more for your warmer climate gardens, (Southern California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico) but some is just general good gardening tips as well.
Thank you and hope you enjoyed my blog on “Trendy Garden Tips for March”.

Lift up Your Spirits with COLOR!
February 25, 2010 | Tagged adding color to you home, pillows, THE TRENDY HOME, wooden shutters, yellow, yellow in the home | Leave a Comment
Too much snow for you?
I live in Southern California and we don’t get snow here where I live (valley), BUT I can see it all around me in the mountains and I do watch the news. I must say we have had a lot of rain this year in Southern California and that also keeps us indoors. That gets us to the reason of this blog – Lift up your spirits with COLOR!
We all know that color can effect your mood, I’m sure some of you have even felt it.
How does a bright, well lite room with a lot of natural light make you feel?

Now compare that to a dark paneled, heavy furniture, all artificial lighting make you feel?

For me the first makes me feel light in the mood, light in the step, full of fun and action; the second makes me feel very serious, no laughter in my heart it’s like I’m waiting to hear bad news!
Here’s some tips to brighten up your home with color.

Blank staircase? Your not into having your family history up the wall, that’s OK! But make a statement, paint it in a light cheerful color to give it a personality, it wall say “Look At Me”!

This is a perfect example how to brighten up a room with color. They have medium to dark wood kitchen cabinets, hardwood flooring, wood beam ceiling, and wooden blinds. All this wood and there’s nothing masculine about this room with the addition of yellow walls, blue and white accents on the wall and fabric chairs to brighten up this everyday look. Now, this is a place I would enjoy sitting drinking my morning coffee watching is snowing outside. (I know, it’s the shoveling we all look forward too!) And by the way: I’m originally from Pennsylvania – spent the first 24 years of my life in York, PA…

One of the easiest ways to add color to any room in your home, and the less expensive is to add colorful pillows! Mix and Match your fabrics, colors, and style.
This is my first blog under our new name ”The Trendy Home”… I sincerely hope you enjoy reading my blogs and taking advantage of some of the great decorating tips I bring to you – make your home “The Trendy Home”…
Enjoy, and have a GREAT day!

Today’s blog is about decorating with a neutral color, GRAY..
Do you think neutrals are boring? When paired up with stylish furnishings and accessories, there is nothing boring about neutrals.
Gray is the ultimate neutral, it go’s along with almost ever color on the color wheel.

Traditional Setting
Adding some cool orange accessories with this black poster bed really makes this room pop, nothing boring here! Going with cream colored bedding and a gray satin duvet cover along with the cream colored shag rug pulls this room together to make a very nice traditional statement.

Contemporary Setting
In this beautiful bedroom using a gray-blue hue on the walls, white molding and dark stained floors and doors are neutral complements to the gray-blue walls. To go with the contemporary setting in this room they dressed the bed all in white bedding, using Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover, Pillow Shams, and white sheet set.

Trendy Twin Beds
In this room gray is used as accents; with the gray upholstered headboard along with the soft gray sheer curtains. This room shows how you can really play with color bedding and create a very nice trendy bed room.
Each bed has a black pillow sham against the headboard and blue and white bedding. At The Trendy Bed this look can easily be created by our wonderful Two-Tone Comforters. Each bed is a mirror image, but opposite in color and style. One can even have fun in the styles of the bedding, one bed can be used for the “female” of the home with “ruffled” style bedding, while the other bed is in the more masculine “tailored” style, each beautiful in design and adds a flare of character and fun to the room.
