The Flu and Bamboo Sheets!

Sisters

Sisters

I got a call from my sister in PA yesterday and she sounded very sick.  I said, “You sound terrible, are you sick?”  Needless to say, she had been home for the last three days in bed sick with the FLU!  Where am I going with this story?      She then said,  “The only good thing about all this – I was in bed with those sheets!”

After we both laughed, she told me how wonderful the King Bamboo sheets were that she had just received from The Trendy Bed.

She was very enthusiastic about how the sheets actually stayed fresh during her bout with the flu,  she went on to say that they kept her very warm during the “chills”, and they did not get wet or clammy when her fever broke!   She then said, “If I knew they were this good I would have ordered another set!”

I’m sharing this story as a true testimonial as to the wonders of Bamboo and Egyptian Cotton Sheets.

The picture above is one of my 4 Sisters (the one that was sick)  and myself @ the Mission Inn in Riverside, CA – Christmas Day  (she was out in sunny CA visiting us!)

Bed Skirts and Footboards!

Bed skirt and iron bed

Bed skirt and iron bed

I had a lady ask me today about how to order a bed skirt when she had an antique iron bed with a footboard.  This is the same for any poster bed, Cannon Ball Bed that is popular on the East Coast.  (I had one when I lived in Pennsylvania growing up)  As in the picture above it can be done,  you have those side rails and wooden slates that your box spring sits on that you want to hide.  That’s the beauty of a bed skirt!

So, what are Split Corners:   On bed skirts, corners at the foot of the bed, from the platform to the hem, constructed without seams to create an opening to accommodate bed ..

When ordering a bed skirt you need to know what style you want,  (ruffled or tailored) and you want to make sure it has split corners,  That way the side rails where it attaches to the foot-board can also be “somewhat” covered as in the picture above and the bed skirt will be behind the foot-board (as in the picture) for a clean “trendy bed” look.

Why Bamboo?

Bamboo Sheets

Bamboo Sheets

Why Bamboo? For starters, did you know that bamboo sheets are actually temperature-regulating? Bamboo fabric naturally stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter, making it the perfect choice for sheets. And let’s not forget that bamboo fabric is naturally antibacterial and allergen free… what more could a person really ask for??

But bamboo sheets aren’t just heavenly to sleep on — they’re also environmentally conscious! An ever-important factor in making any decision, bamboo sheets are made from one of the world’s fastest growing, greenest, most renewable resource — bamboo! Bamboo plants can grow up to a foot per day (unlike those slow-growing “lucky bamboo plants, which coincidentally aren’t really bamboo), so there’s really no worry about deforestation. Another wonderful factor: because bamboo can grow so densely, a bamboo forest has around 40% more biomass than a regular hardwood forest. That’s 40% more carbon-reducing power!

As soft as cashmere, as smooth as silk… bamboo sheets are today’s luxury bedding choice. It seems strange to those who haven’t slept on bamboo sheets or tried other bamboo fabric products, but when bamboo grass is spun into fabric is quite literally is like a blend of cashmere and silk.

People all over the world are switching from cotton to bamboo sheets and bedding… once you try it, you’ll never go back.

Bed with alot of pillow and shams

Bed with alot of pillow and shams

EURO SHAM:  Named after its popularity in Europe, a Euro Sham has dual purposes.  It is a square pillow, with a standard 26″ x 26″ measurement.  It can be used for decorative purposes to accent the bed, and is also an excellent pillow to lean back on to read, write or sit up in bed.

ENVELOPE PILLOW:  A smaller pillow, usually with different fabrics or design where one piece of fabric is enveloped over the other, creating a unique, multi fabric or colored look.

FLANGED:  Bedding products that are described as “flanged” mean they have a decorative band of fabric surrounding them.  This is most common for pillows.  A flanged pillow’s decorative fabric is usually straight or has a more tailored look, rather than a ruffle.

chintz sham

NECK-ROLL:  A neck-roll is a cylindrical pillow, usually small, about 12″ x 6″, however, with neckrolls being increasingly popular, different sizes are now readily available, anywhere from 19″ x 6″ and up.  a neck-roll pillow can add a simple and unique element to any design style.

pillows

SHAM:  A sham is similar to a pillowcase, but more decorative and is usually not slept on.  Shams are usually ruffled, quilted or flanged and are used to hide pillows or to simply decorate the bed.  They are popular for use with a comforter or coverlet, as neither will over your pillows.  They are usually available in 4 sizes;  standard, queen, king, and Euro.

WELT:  Welt is another name for cording.  Cording is ofter used on comforters, shams or decorative pillows.  Self-Welt means the cording is made from the same fabric of the item.  Welts are created in different sizes to obtain different styles and looks for each piece.

Common Bedding Terms – Duvet Cover

Duvet Cover - Bed In A Bag

Duvet Cover - Bed In A Bag

Duvet Cover

A Duvet cover is a cover to protect your duvet, but it does have many purposes!

First, the duvet covers are used to protect your comforters, usually a down comforter.  (Goose down comforters are not advised to be washed)  The duvet protects the fabrics from wear, tear, and the everyday elements it comes in contact with (dust, stains, pets, etc.), and in the case of down comforters, a duvet cover helps in trapping escaping feathers.

The Duvet cover however, has more features.  In the warmer and humid months, a duvet cover can be used on it’s own as a bed cover.  It provides you with a cooler, lightweight cover without the hassle or cost of buying a light weight comforter, bedspread or blanket.

Duvet covers can also be used to redecorate.  If you are repainting your room and your current comforter is still in wonderful condition, but it just doesn’t go with your new decorating motif, a new duvet cover over your current comforter will allow you the freedom to totally redesign your bed, without having to spend that extra money on a new comforter.   Duvet covers are considerable less expensive than those good down comforter and if you can, purchase two covers so you can alternate during washing cycle.

Duvet Covers have become extremely popular over the last few years because of their versatility, and the designs and styles available are endless.

The picture above is actually our designer “Bloomingdale”  Duvet Cover Bed-In-A-Bag –  9 piece set:  Duvet Cover that is reversible with opposite design,  alternative down comforter, 2 pillow shams, 2 pillow cases, 1 fitted sheet, and 2 Euro size pillow shams.

Common Bedding Terms – Daybed

eyelet day bed

Simply put, a daybed is a twin bed turned to the side in order to save space and create a comfortable seating area in place of a couch, and then at night it is used for a bed.

Usually, the daybed has a frame, with a headboard, foot-board and sideboard along the back.  (See picture above)  It fits a twin sized mattress which doubles during the day as a seating area.   It is common for daybeds to have shams or large bolster pillows along the back to be used as backrests when being used for seating.

Common Bedding Terms

Bedspread with bedskirt

Bedspread with bedskirt

What is a Bedspread?

A Bedspread is a lightweight bed cover, it is large enough to fold over and cover the bed pillows and hangs down to the floor on a standard bed.  On higher beds a bed skirt can be added to complete the look.  In the above picture they are showing a neutral color (tan) bed skirt to prevent the under bed to be seen while bedspread is pulled back.

Bedspreads are not usually as fluffy or as thick as a comforter, and a bedspread provides a more lightweight, cooler cover than the standard comforter.  Usually coordinating shams are available to decorate the bed, but are an optional accessory as the bedspread will cover the pillows.
