The Facts on Cotton Bedding…

Is it really all about Thread Count?

THREAD COUNT: Simply put, this is the number of threads per square inch. both vertical and horizontal, in a one-inch square of fabric. Hold the sheet up to the light, if you can see through the fabric and make out the actual weave, you’ve got a low thread count on your hands. The higher the thread count (or tc), the softer and more lustrous the fabric, and the more durable and less prone to shrinkage.

PERCALE: A smooth, flat, closely woven and combed fabric that comes in 100% cotton or 50/50 cotton/poly blends.  Finer than muslin, expect TC’s here to range from 180-250.

PIMA or SUPIMA: A high quality cotton whose long fiber staple is somewhat similar to that of Egyptian cotton. The differences are geographical only. Pima is grown in the southwestern part of the U.S. and Egyptian is grown along the Nile River. Supima is made from extra-long staple Pima. The soft hand feel of Pima and Supima make them very desirable in bedding. Expect to find TC’s here from 200-300.

EGYPTIAN COTTON:  This is the cotton queen of the Nile.  Grown alongside the river, this quintessential cotton owes its superior durability, luster, and silky hand feel to its extra long fiber staple. TC counts range from 200-1000.

Egyptian Cotton at it's Best!

SATEEN: a weave construction that has more yarn surface on the face of the cloth than other basic weaves giving a softer hand and more lustrous look.

I hope we all got a little more information on The Facts of Cotton and thread count.

My Happy Place…

Creating Your Happy Space

I’m not sure if it’s the Holidays, or our busy schedules but it is becoming more important to us to have what I call “My Happy Place”.

I had a customer email me just this week and she is a writer – photographer and had a commercial office space and decided at her age she wanted a home office now.    She called her space her “Scared Space” and she was asking for some advise and my opinion on a Daybed that she had just added to her room.

Another “Happy Place” could be a great place to read a good book,  watch the snow falling, or a good rain storm,  watching the kids play outside without them knowing.  My vision of this space is a great window seat.

And when I was a Child I remember my Mother saying  “Calgon Take Me A Way” this was her way of wishing for her Happy Place – The Bath Tub…

And to one Mother her  “Happy Place”  is on  a Sunday  afternoon,  her 3-year old son has his trains and blocks spread out, and she and her  husband are reading the paper and drinking their favorite cup of coffee.   It’s  “My Happy Place”  because I’m with the ones I love most and this space is who we are as a family.

And my last “My Happy Place” is a beautiful Bedroom.  I have always had a thing for Bedrooms,  I like them to be inviting, and romantic but not over the top!   Here is one of my favorite pictures of Beautiful Bedrooms.

I hope you all have “Your Happy Place” and I welcome you to share them with me and my readers.

Here’s to YOU, and 2010 and wishing only the best for you in 2011;    Make Your Home…

Happy New Year…   and be Safe!

Trendy Fall Decorating Tips

Trendy decorating tips to take your home from Summer to Fall.

The transition from summer to fall can be a good time to get your home organized and in shape since most of us shift our focus indoors.   If you’re like me, I’ll take my bedding from white to color.

Let’s not be fooled by all the attention paid to “Spring Cleaning”,  in the fall your home will need just as much attention due to being closed up.   This is the perfect time to infuse your space with color and warmth to carry you through the winter months.

Bring the outside in with mums and pumpkins,   decorate your dinning table with a decorative centerpiece and update accessories to fall colors.   There are many ways to bring in the warm, deep colors and cozy textures of fall,  Bedding, Bath linens,  accent pillows, place mats, and cloth napkins.

To really make a statement without too much work focus your seasonal decorating to what your guest see first when they walk in your home.

It’s OK to be bold,  bold stands out and Say’s Notice Me!

When decorating try to focus on a big ticket item in a room such as the comforter or quilt in the bedroom or pillows, lamps or rug in the living room.

This years colors are bold and bright, especially deep reds and purples and can be a nice complement to the normal subdued and darker tones that are usual for fall.

Add a vase,  candle stick, or bowl to make your room pop with color.

Enjoy, be creative, and most of all have fun in making your HOME

Interior Decorating Tips – Guest Room

Sometimes I Love when Guest are coming, or we are having a get-together,  It’s the only time my “Honey Do” List gets done completely!   It is a great motivator for home improvements,  or maybe it’s just a little sprucing up.

Is it time to declutter your home?

cluttered-house

From that to this?

Up Close and Personal

Don’t get me wrong,  A home needs to look and feel comfortable and lived in but too much “lived in” can be a little over whelming for your house guest.

In decorating your guest bedroom, keep it simple.  I guest room can be very comfortable and accommodating without being over done.

two tone bedding

If you have only one guest room choose twin beds over a double or queen;  that way children, friends, or couples can occupy the room comfortably.    A shared, center table serves both beds as a place for a personal items and alarm clock or radio.

100023407

Another way to make your house guest comfortable is by installing a TV.   We all know the purpose of a house guest is to visit with the host,  but we all need some “down time”, this can come late at night when one goes to bed, or first thing in the morning with their first cup of coffee.

Install a TV

Make space for your guest with drawer space and closet space.    If you are like me, my guest room closet is full of winter coats – move them if you can or at least move them to the side and make it known that this open space is for them.  Make sure they have hangers available and a nice house/bath robe is a nice touch that your guests would surly appreciate.  At The Trendy Bed we have Bamboo Robes and 100% Organic Cotton House Robes made by Pure Fiber.

Make space in the closet

Please  make sure your guest have comfortable bedding.   You don’t have to have the best, but the one thing you do need is clean, comfortable, well fitted sheets.

home_bed

At The Trendy Bed let us help you in this area, we have Sheet Sets from 300 thread count to 1500 thread count;   Satin Sheets,  100% Bamboo,  or Bamboo / Egyptian Cotton Blend.   Our 300 thread count – Beyond Bliss is heavenly, and affordable with matching Duvet Covers, Bed Skirts, and Shams.

Guest Rooms are one topic I enjoy writing on, it’s so nice to be spoiled;   and it’s even nicer to spoil someone we love!

I hope I’ve given you some ideas to help you to turn your home into….

Today’s Trendy Home Challenge #3:  Furniture lines every wall!

Today we will be looking at Living Rooms and how to make intimate groupings that encourage conversation.

Trendy Indoor Living Room Decorating

Living Room #1

This is a large beautiful Living room but is the furniture spread too far apart?  Can you reach the coffee table sitting on the sofa or chair?

Living Room Decorating Tips

Living Room #2

In this Large Living room they actually made two intimate groupings,  two identical sofa’s are lined up back to back with a sofa table between them to add height and separation between the two groupings.

Trendy Living Room

Living Room #3

In this living room you get a nice  close and Personal feeling,   nobody likes a wallflower, especially when it comes to furniture.

Living Room Decorating Ideas

Living Room #4

Moving the furniture away from the wall and making an intimate grouping will actually make your room seem larger.

Sofas Living Room

Living Room #5

In the United States, sometimes the living room is reserved for more formal and quiet entertaining while a separate recreation room or family room is used for more casual activities.

Decorative Living Room with Fire Place

Living Room #6

In most of these groupings they have something in common, two matching sofa’s facing each other with a coffee table in between to support the beverage and light snacks.

Small Living Room Design

Living Room #7

This last picture is a living room in a  Condominium or Townhouse where the rooms are not as large or defined as in your standard house,  but as you see they have created a very nice, intimate area for two people to enjoy a conversation and the ambiance of the fireplace.

I hope you enjoyed today’s challenge of creating a more personal,  intimate space in the Living Room and have helped you in making your home….

Add texture and Color

Add punch to a window seat or built in by adding texture and color.   Add your cushion and decorative pillows to give you your texture and comfort and top it off by a colorful throw.

Window Decorating Tips – Trendy Home Challenge

Today’s Trendy Home Challenge #1:  Low Ceilings

I can across some really cool tips for almost every room in your home, most of them are very inexpensive decorating tips that can generate a complete new mood to any room.

Thank you Better Homes and Garden for all your great ideals.

You have low ceilings in your home and you would like to generate a little height in your room.

Low Ceilings

Low Ceilings

Solution:  Make a room seem taller by installing the curtain rod ABOVE the window frame.  Draperies should graze the bottom of the window sill OR on the floor like the next picture.

Create elegance with length

Create elegance with length

You can also create Height and Elegance with length – in this picture they hung the decorative curtain rod above the window to take your eyes up,  and then down with the long drapes to the floor giving the room a high ceiling effect.

Cornice Box

Cornice Box

If you do not necessary like that look but you want to create height to your room you can make a Cornice Box to conceal your window hardware and give it a much needed face lift.   These cornice box’s can be made out of plywood and crown molding like the one above, or just plywood and be covered by matching fabric.  This little tip can be used in every room in your home.

Elegant Cornice Top

Elegant Cornice Top

In this Dinning Room they covered the Cornice Box’s with matching drapery fabric and fringe to create a very Formal and Elegant look;   they also installed  chair rail and wainscoting in this room that will also keep your eyes busy giving the room a much larger feel.

Hope this gave you an idea or two for the windows in your home, stay tuned for our Challenge #2

Thank you for taking the time in reading my blog and I hope they help you make your Home…thetrendyhomeBLOG-THUMBNAIL

Bathroom Remodeling – Interior Ideas and Tips

Trendy Bathrooms in Pastel…

When it comes to remodeling your house the Kitchen and the Bathroom are the two most popular rooms in your house.

Soft Aqua Bathroom

So, why is it that one of the smallest rooms in the house—the bathroom— can costs so much to upgrade?      This is the subject of today’s blog.  We have a little secret:   Bathroom overhauls don’t have to put the hurt on your wallet!   In fact, you can have fun adding personality and pretty touches without spending a fortune.   One good idea when remodeling or upgrading a bathroom is using wainscoting, the benefits are numerous, the look is beautiful, and you can do it your self. Here are some great bathrooms all using wainscoting, and a touch of color to brighten up the room.

Luxury in Lavender

Lavender in Luxury

Another great DIY idea is painting your bathroom,  yes the room is small and it is not the easiest to paint,  but never underestimate the power of paint!

If purple is your royal color, then this lavender bathroom exudes that same royal feeling.   The pale lavender walls,  white wainscoting,  a black sink to create some “drama”,  and a nice set of shelves to show case your bathroom accessories and beautiful towels.

Bubble Baths in Blue

Bubbles in Blue

If Baby Blue is your color, this is the bathroom for you.  Soft blue walls and creamy white wainscoting shimmer against sparkling chrome faucets and sconces.   While your upgrading your bathroom with new paint,   it’s the perfect time to upgrade those fixtures and towel racks.   When it’s all done, sit back and enjoy that bubble bath!

Goodlooking in Green

Grandeur in Green

Set at treetop level, this attic bath set in soft green walls, cool white wainscoting and white “Pegasus Versailles” sink.     Building a fake wall to hide the plumbing was also a great way to make a shelf behind the sink,  just another creative way to use the wainscoting and create a focal point in the room.

Pretty in Pink

Pretty in Pink

What a beautiful Claw Foot Tub, painting the exterior black makes a beautiful statement along with pulling out the black in the floor design.   Adding the new “vintage” hardware makes it easy for daily cleansing rituals.  This black and white bath gets a shot of color from a soft pink paint color on the walls, along with the white wainscoting to give the bath a true vintage flare.

Yield in Youthful Yellow

Yield in Youthful Yellow

When I saw this yellow bathroom and reminded me of a previous blog when I said “Yellow” is the in color this year,  yellow has been very popular in home decorating this spring.

In this smaller bathroom,  they painted the upper walls in a pale yellow, lower walls in white wainscoting,  and added a new pedestal sink to give it a updated look.

Hope I inspired you to give your bathroom a face lift, or even a new color,  and turn your home into……
