March can be a busy month for gardeners and I came across some tips for us “Home Gardeners”.

Bulbs:   Once them bloom cut the faded flowers from the spring builds.  The unsightly foliage of daffodils and other spring bulbs should NOT be removed or tied up yet as the bulb needs the nourishment from these leaves for the food energy to produce next year’s flowers.

Clumps of perennials can be divided this month that are just showing new growth.

Perennial Plant - Coreopsis

Prune flowering fruit trees and other deciduous spring flowering shrubs as soon as the blossoms are finished.  Prune, shape and thin, direct the growth pattern outward, and to open the center to light to promote heavy new growth to bloom next year.

Clean out dead leaves and branches from evergreen shrubs and trees.  Hold off until the end of the month or April to prune sub-tropicals  such as hibiscus, bougainvillea, fuchsia and other frost damaged plants.

Pest Control:  Look out for those pesty aphids and white flies on the new leaves of your roses and other shrubs.  For a few troubled plants wash with a strong jet of water.  You can also use an insecticidal soap or vinegar in a sprayer with a hose attachment applied at the rate of two tablespoons per gallon.  For a few bushes with mildew, spray household Lysol or the vinegar solution.   It is advised to spray roses with this vinegar solution three times a year, spring, late May, and August.    Keep a scheduled regime to get rid of snails and slugs.

Fertilizing is a must for blooming plants.  It is advised to use a light solution of a balanced or high bloom fertilizer (one-half strength) twice a month.  Don’t forget to fertilize your acid loving plants this month ans use a dose of chelated iron if the leaves are turning yellow.   It is advised to keep a record as to when you do fertilize your plants, too much to worse than not at all!

LAWNS:   March is a good time to renovate your old lawn or sow a new one.    Both established lawns and winter-dormant lawns could use a good high nitrogen feeding fertilizer 21-0-0. Don’t use a weed and feed product with an insecticide as it kills good insects as well.   Treat lawns that the European crane fly has infested.  This is also a good time to renovate and thatch your lawn.

Don’t forget to change your clocks and your sprinkler system clocks ahead for Sunday, March 14th.

Note:   This advise is more for your warmer climate gardens, (Southern California, Florida, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico) but some is just general good gardening tips as well.

I live in Southern California and we don’t get snow here where I live (valley),  BUT I can see it all around me in the mountains and I do watch the news.   I must say we have had a lot of rain this year in Southern California and that also keeps us indoors.   That gets us to the reason of this blog – Lift up your spirits with COLOR!

We all know that color can effect your mood, I’m sure some of you have even felt it.

How does a bright, well lite room with a lot of natural light make you feel?

Now compare that to a dark paneled, heavy furniture,  all artificial lighting make you feel?

For me the first makes me feel light in the mood, light in the step, full of fun and action;  the second makes me feel very serious,  no laughter in my heart it’s like I’m waiting to hear bad news!

Here’s some tips to brighten up your home with color.

Blank staircase?   Your not into having your family history up the wall, that’s OK!  But make a statement, paint it in a light cheerful color to give it a personality,  it wall say “Look At Me”!

This is a perfect example how to brighten up a room with color.  They have medium to dark wood kitchen cabinets,  hardwood flooring, wood beam ceiling, and wooden blinds. All this wood and there’s nothing masculine about this room with the addition of  yellow walls, blue and white accents on the wall and fabric chairs to brighten up this everyday look.   Now, this is a place I would enjoy sitting  drinking my morning coffee watching is snowing outside.    (I know, it’s the shoveling we all look forward too!)     And by the way:  I’m originally from Pennsylvania – spent the first 24 years of my life in York, PA…

One of the easiest ways to add color to any room in your home, and the less expensive is to add colorful pillows! Mix and Match your fabrics, colors, and style.

Do you think neutrals are boring?       When paired up with stylish furnishings and accessories, there is nothing boring about neutrals.

Gray is the ultimate neutral, it go’s along with almost ever color on the color wheel.   

Traditional Setting

Adding some cool orange accessories with this black poster bed really makes this room pop, nothing boring here!   Going with cream colored bedding and a gray satin duvet cover along with the cream colored shag rug pulls this room together to make a very nice traditional statement.

Contemporary Setting

In this beautiful bedroom using a gray-blue hue on the walls, white molding and dark stained floors and doors are neutral complements to the gray-blue walls.   To go with the contemporary setting in this room they dressed the bed all in white bedding,  using Egyptian Cotton Duvet Cover, Pillow Shams, and white sheet set.

Trendy Twin Beds

In this room gray is used as accents;  with the gray upholstered headboard along with the soft gray sheer curtains.  This room shows how you can really play with color bedding and create a very nice trendy bed room.

What’s new in Interior Design?  Well, the big  New York Gift Fair is currently going on (January 30th – February 3rd) at the Javits Convention Center and Pier 94.   The NYIGF is held in January and August and showcases gifts and goods for the home.  It’s one of the largest shows for retailers, buyers, distributors, importers, wholesalers and manufacturers’ representatives to bring their goods or come and see what’s Hot, and NEW!

From the Fair the reports are coming back on a big focus on handmade and whimsical design, and a lot of color:   Orange is hanging on, turquoise and browns are also showing up.    I’m glad to see Orange is still hanging on, I did  Trendy Teen Room-Bold and Beautiful talking about decorating with Orange.  At The Trendy Bed Orange has been a big seller this year in comforters and duvet covers.

Today’s article from Oregonlive.com is by Bridget A. Otto, The Oregonian called Interior design news direct from New York Gift Fair is where I actually got the picture of the brown and white bed above.   Why did this catch my eye?

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner and I was reading my Traditional Home magazine,  I came across this article that I wanted to share with my readers.

Do you love red?   When it comes to sports cars, lipstick, and decorating, you can’t go wrong with the color of LOVE…    Here’s some tips and actual color suggestions  on how to turn up the heat in style.

I came across this top picture and it agrees with a lot of the designers,  Red is a great color when used to accessorize a room.  Like a great nail polish, it provides a daring bit of allure.

They accessorized the bed with a tailored red bed skirt with kick pleats, a red throw along with red accent pillows, and a red headboard to complete the look.  They accessorized the room with a red chair, and  red and bone window treatment to create a beautiful master bedroom.

OK, so you want to try some red in your bedroom?   Try it on some accessories, paint a lamp, headboard, or even candlestricks for a glimmer of excitement.   Red accents go perfect with Grays, Lt. Have you been shopping for some new bedding on line and seen a term that was totally foreign to you?   At The Trendy we’ll help you take the guess work out of your next shopping experience with this list of essential bedding terminology.

Bed Spread:  A bed cover with sides that do go to the floor, does not “require” a bed skirt.

Comforter:  A bed cover that is filled and quilted and usually reversible,  does require a bed skirt to complete that “Trendy Bed” look, sides go about halfway to floor.  (Picture above)

Thread Count:  The number of thread ends per square inch in a woven fabric.

Bed Skirt:  Also called Bed Ruffle or Dust Ruffle – a decorative piece of bedding used to cover the box spring and legs of the bed.  It usually fits between the mattress and box spring and hangs to the floor. 

Drop:  The length of the Bed Skirt.

Pleated:  Sew in folds like a fan.

Flanged:  A decorative band of fabric that is straight or “tailored”;  often used to describe pillow shams.

Pillow Shams:  A decorative covering for pillows, often designed with trims, ruffles, flanges or cording.  Shams are normally placed behind the pillows used to sleep on.

European Sham or (Euro Sham):  A decorative pillow covering which fits a large 26″ x 26″ pillow.

Tailored:  Simple in line or design.

Boudoir Pillows or Breakfast Pillows:  Small rectangular decorative throw pillows.

Duvet Cover:  A decorative and protective covering for a duvet (usually down), most duvet covers have a button or tie closure at one end.

Neck Roll:   Small cylindrical decorative throw pillows.

Swatches:  Sample cuttings of fabric.
